NBFA's Confident Young Women Give Back to the Community

A group of civic minded young women has emerged at New Beginnings Family Academy. Calling themselves “CYW” - short for Confident Young Women - the group of eighth grade students has organized and executed a number of projects to benefit the community and set a positive example for others. The most recent, a carnation fundraiser, raised $300 for the family of Terra Wallace, a Blackham student who allegedly committed suicide in January. Some of the CYW girls know the family personally, but all agreed to help.
“Our motto is gaining confidence by helping, so that’s what we wanted to do,” explains Ashley Bruce, the group’s communicator.
The young ladies also ran a successful food drive to help the Prospect House and raised close to $200 in a bake sale that provided start up funds for the organization, which formed in late November.
“Doing good for others is the right thing to do,” says Shawtima Moore, treasurer. “Plus, it makes us feel good.”
